CANCER IMMUNOLOGY
Cancer occurs when certain of the body's cells multiply uncontrollably and invade other organs and tissues of the body. This invasion causes tissue destruction and if untreated the death of the patient.
In laboratory animals it has been shown that most tumor cells are chemically different from the other body cells; the cancer cells carry tumor-specific antigens. Usually they are rather weak antigens, and it is probably for this reason that the immune mechanisms of the animal cannot reject the tumor. Although there is a battle between the growing tumor and the body's lymphocytes, the cancer wins.
Working with laboratory animals, scientists have discovered ways to make the immune response to cancer antigens so strong that the tumor is rejected, and a large branch of cancer research is concerned with tumor immunology.
Extensive clinical studies have shown that alkylglycerols are effective in the following:
