The historic health benefits of shark liver oil has always been a main stay in folk medicine worldwide. Fishermen of the Surga Bay on the Izu Peninsula of ancient Japan called it "Samedawa" or "cure all". The sharks they fished from the bottom of the bay measuring over 1,000 meters deeps, had a delectable meat. The specially valued its liver oil which they ingested regularly because they felt better whenever they took it. In Norway and Sweden, shark liver oil was used traditionally by fishermen for healing wounds and irritations of the respiratory tract. In China, the extract of deep sea shark has been recorded in the ancient pharmaceutical book "Honzukomuko". In Spain, ancient mariners regularly took "aceite de bacalao" or oil of the great fish. They claimed a greater resistance to colds and various other diseases because of it. In the Micronesian Islands, a "miracle working" shark oil has been an age old remedy for various sickness and diseases as well as familiar source of strength, stamina and virility. Ernest Hemingway's book - "The Old Man and the Sea" it says of the old man .... "He also drank shark liver oil each day from the drum in the shack where many of the fishermen kept their gear ... it was very good against all colds and grippes and it was good for the eyes." Scientific FactIn 1758 Swedish botanist Carolus Linnaeus discovered and claimed the great medicinal value of oil extracts from deep sea sharks. In 1922 two Japanese researchers, M. Tsujimoto and Y. Toyama made the discovery of alkylglycerols in deep sea sharks. In 1952 a young Swedish doctor named Astrid Brohult began to give the bone-marrow scrapings from calves to children hospitalized with leukemia. Dr. Brohult reasoned that since white blood cells are produced in bone marrow, perhaps an extract of marrow would help in cases of abnormal white blood cell production. The results - increased energy and the normalization of white blood cells counts were uneven. She asked her husband Dr. Sven Brohult a professor of chemistry to form a team to analyze the calves' bone marrow. In 1962 Dr. Sven Brohult was able to identify and establish the efficacy of alkylglycerols. Together with a Swedish pharmaceutical company the doctors Brohult where able to determine the best source of alkylglycerols was found in cold water deep sea sharks. |
